Fundamentals

Why grout colour matters so much

Grout is not a supporting player – it is a design element in its own right. On a Cube with 10×10 cm tiles, the grout joints account for up to 15 % of the visible surface. The grout colour therefore determines whether the piece of furniture reads as a single unified whole, or whether each tile stands out as an individual square.

Harmonious grout colours sit close to the tile colour. The result is an almost monolithic effect: the surface appears closed, sculptural, calm. White tiles with white grout, terracotta tiles with sand-coloured grout – both combinations produce this effect. Contrasting grout colours, on the other hand, emphasise the grid, make each tile visible and give the Cube structure and vitality.

Tile size amplifies this effect: with 10×10 cm ceramic tiles, far more grout is visible than with 15×15 cm. A high-contrast grout colour on small tiles looks more graphic and prominent; on larger tiles the same contrast remains subtler. Those who prefer calm should choose a harmonious grout colour with small tiles – those who want structure should choose contrast.

How it works

Three steps to your grout colour

Step 1

Choose your material

Wood tile Cubes offer 6 coordinated grout colours in earth tones and natural shades. Ceramic tile Cubes offer 22 grout colours – from White to Orange, from Anthracite to Lilac. Your material determines the range of options.

Step 2

Tile size & colour

10×10 cm or 15×15 cm – tile size determines how much grout is visible. Then comes tile colour: choosing white gives you more contrast flexibility. Terracotta or mint green require a more targeted colour choice.

Step 3

Receive your recommendation

The Grout Colour Finder provides three concrete recommendations with a harmony score and live preview. The selection can be transferred directly to the configurator – no further searching, no uncertainty.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about grout colour

Which grout colour goes with white tiles?

White tiles work well with White (monolithic, sculptural), Light Grey (classic), Dark Grey (safe, timeless) or Black (graphic, urban). For maximum contrast: Black with 10×10 cm tiles. For calm: White on White.

Which grout colour is easiest to maintain?

Darker tones such as Dark Grey, Anthracite and Black are the easiest to maintain – stains and dirt are barely visible. Light grouts (White, Sand) look fresher but need regular cleaning.

Can I choose the grout colour freely at COLB?

Yes. Ceramic tile Cubes are configurable in 22 grout colours, wood tile Cubes in 6 standard shades. The Grout Colour Finder and the configurator let you visualise the combination before ordering.

How many grout colours does COLB offer?

22 grout colours for ceramic tiles: White, Sand, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Anthracite, Black, Terracotta, Pink, Lilac, Blue, Orange, Clay and more. 6 grout colours for wood tile Cubes (custom requests possible).

What is the difference between a harmonious and a contrasting grout colour?

Harmonious: the grout colour sits close to the tile colour → the surface looks like one piece, almost monolithic. Contrasting: the grout colour highlights each tile individually → graphic, lively, structured.
